Protecting Lunar Heritage: an international event hosted by MAPPALab and the course in Modern and Contemporary Archaeology
On 14 September 2026, from 14:00 to 16:00, MAPPALab and the University of Pisa’s course in Modern and Contemporary Archaeology will host the international event Protecting Lunar Heritage: Developing Guidelines and Recommendations for Controlled Lunar Deorbiting.
Organised by the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Aerospace Heritage as part of International Moon Day 2026, the event will focus on the protection of lunar archaeological heritage: the material traces left by space missions which, since 1959, have documented humanity’s earliest interactions with another celestial body.
Representatives of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Aerospace Heritage will introduce the Committee and its activities, discuss the main threats to the preservation of lunar heritage, and present its ongoing work to develop international guidelines and recommendations.
The event will take place in a hybrid format. Participants can attend in person in Room PAO B1 at Palazzo Carità, Via Pasquale Paoli 15, Pisa, or join online following free registration.
