Partecipation at ArcheoFOSS 19-2025 Open software, hardware, processes, data and formats in archaeological research

Participation in the ArcheoFOSS 2025 conference is dedicated to the use of open-source software and infrastructures in archaeological and cultural heritage disciplines. Central themes include data interoperability, methodological transparency, the adoption of open standards, and the development of shared digital ecosystems for research.

Within this context, Lorena Bravi’s contribution, entitled “SHARED: Semantic-based Heterogeneous Archive for Reusable Exchangeable Data in Archaeology and Archaeometry”, is part of the panel “Casting the Net Wide: Open Network Approaches in Italian Archaeology”, devoted to network approaches and open models in Italian archaeology. The SHARED project proposes the creation of an event-centric knowledge graph based on ontologies and open standards (CIDOC CRM, CRMsci, CRMarchaeo, AO-Cat), with the aim of integrating archaeological and archaeometric data into a coherent, traceable, and interoperable semantic archive.
The topic is of particular interest as it addresses the challenge of integrating the material and informational dimensions of research, promoting an open, FAIR, and reproducible approach to archaeological data management.

Filippo Sala, on the other hand, will present a contribution entitled “TagLab for the Archaeology of Architecture: AI-assisted Segmentation, Annotation and Analysis”, included in the panel “Artificial Intelligence and Coding for the Archaeology of Architecture: New Methods for the Analysis of Standing Structures.” On this occasion, the AI-based semi-automatic masonry segmentation software TagLab, developed within the PRINN 2022 OPUS project, will be presented.
