At the Italian National Conference on Geosciences, Massimiliano Puntin will be present with a poster illustrating part of his doctoral research, presenting a methodology for investigating the origin of the raw materials used to produce pigments in Roman times.
In the first phase, non-invasive and portable investigation techniques (XRF, Raman, FT-IR, FORS, hyperspectral imaging) are applied to characterise the pigments, identify mixtures and understand the technical choices made. The data obtained will be explored through PCA and Cluster Analysis, in order to recognise common patterns and select the most representative samples to be subjected to micro-invasive investigations.
This second phase will allow the identification of potential areas of origin of the raw materials, hypotheses that will subsequently be verified through geological sampling campaigns.
The conference will take place in Padua between 16 and 18 September https://www.geoscienze.org/padova2025/
